Unprotected sex

Unprotected Sex (HIV)

Unprotected Sex implies engaging in vaginal, oral or anal sex without using precautionary measures. It increases the risk of contracting HIV and other STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections). The virus present in the bodily fluids (semen, vaginal fluid, blood, anal mucus or pre-cum) of an HIV infected person can enter the body of their partner during unprotected sex. This happens when the fluids penetrate through the mucous lining of the vagina, penis, rectum, mouth and throat.

Unprotected anal or vaginal sex is the biggest reason that people get HIV. Anal sex is considered as the most unsafe sexual practice as the inside layer of anus is extremely delicate and gets ruptured easily as compared to the inside layer of the vagina. The probability of contracting HIV through unprotected oral sex is quite less, but can occur if an Hiv infected person receives oral sex or the partner providing oral sex has bleeding gums or has ulcers or sores in the mouth.

An Hiv infected person is more likely to transmit the infection to their sexual partners in the initial months after infection because of large quantities of virus in his/her body fluids during this time. Also, a person may not even know that they have the infection during the initial months.

Thus, it is extremely risky to have unprotected sex as the virus may enter your body any time you have sex without a condom.

You can avoid contracting hiv by using:

• Condoms while having sex
• Lubricants to reduce tearing of vaginal or anal lining due to dryness or friction
• Dental dams to cover the vagina/anus or mouth to reduce the risk during unprotected oral sex
• PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis), an antiretroviral drug, to reduce the risk of contracting HIV infection
